Every January 1, the State Board of Elections runs a data pull to get a snapshot of voter registration numbers at the turn of the year. This provides a final data point for the previous year, and creates a natural comparative for the coming year's registration numbers. When the data is pulled, it is based on voting district. Voter registration numbers are subdivided by U.S. House districts, N.C. Senate districts, and N.C. House districts.
This information is also important for citizens seeking to file petitions. Many petition thresholds are based on a percentage of these numbers. For more information on petitons and petition requirements, visit our petitions webpage.
